Why Spanish?
Spanish is a wonderful language for students to learn for the following reasons:
- It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world with hundreds of millions ofspeakers in many countries.
- It is the language of several countries close to the United States.
- It is the second most widely spoken language in the United States and the number of people in the U.S. that speak it continues to grow.
- It is related to several other languages, including Italian and French. Learning these related languages is much easier once a student has learned Spanish.

People who speak 2 languages are more adept at learning a new foreign language than their monolingual counterparts, according to researchers; and their bilingual advantage persists even when the new language they study is completely different from the languages they already know. It's not about being "good" at learning other languages, they say, it's the experience of become bilingual itself that makes learning another language easier.
Objectives
ESL's long-term goal for each of its students is fluency in Spanish. That long-term goal can be broken down into several smaller steps as follows:
- Initially the goal is to expose students to the Spanish language and culture in a fun and non-threatening environment and to foster genuine interest in, and excitement for learning Spanish.
- The next objective is to have students begin to understand basic spoken Spanish, to respond to instructions given in Spanish, to produce simple Spanish sentences. such as greetings, instructions, and simple sentences.
- Then students develop the ability to express facts, needs, thoughts, and opinions in spoken and written Spanish. They also learn to obtain information from reading Spanish text.
- Finally, students acquire enough skills to converse completely in Spanish.
